What to Pack for a Luxury Cabin Getaway in Oklahoma
There's a particular kind of joy that comes with a cabin trip — the kind where you trade your morning commute for a cup of coffee on a deck overlooking pine trees. But showing up unprepared can turn that dream into a scramble. Cell service in Hochatown can be spotty, the nearest big-box store is a good drive away, and nothing kills the vibe faster than realizing you forgot something important.
We've hosted enough guests at Okie Hideaway to know exactly what people wish they'd brought — and what they didn't need to pack at all. Here's our definitive list.
The Essentials
Groceries and drinks for the whole stay. The cabin has a fully stocked kitchen, but the nearest full grocery store is in Broken Bow, about 15 minutes away. Stock up before you head into Hochatown. Think easy breakfasts, snacks for the trail, and everything you need for one or two meals in — plus whatever you're planning to grill.
Firewood. There's nothing like an evening around the fire pit — and we've got you covered. Firewood is provided at the cabin, so just show up and we'll have everything you need for a perfect night by the fire.
A good cooler. If you're heading to the lake or out on a hike, a quality cooler loaded with drinks and snacks is one of the best investments you can make for the trip.
Comfortable layers. Oklahoma weather is famously unpredictable, and the elevation around Broken Bow can make evenings significantly cooler than you expect — especially in spring and fall. Pack a hoodie or light jacket even in summer. For fall visits, bring a proper warm layer; nights in October can dip into the 40s.
For the Outdoors
Hiking shoes or trail runners. Flip flops won't cut it on Beavers Bend trails. Bring a pair of closed-toe shoes you're comfortable walking in for a few miles.
Insect repellent. This is non-negotiable from late spring through early fall. The pine forest is beautiful, but the mosquitoes are real. DEET-based repellent or a permethrin spray for your clothing works best.
Sunscreen. Even in the shade of the forest, you'll get more sun than you expect — especially on the water.
A reusable water bottle. Stay hydrated on the trails. There are no water fountains mid-hike.
Fishing license (if you plan to fish). Purchase your Oklahoma fishing license online at the ODWC website before you arrive. It takes five minutes and saves you the headache of tracking one down once you're here.
For the Cabin
Bluetooth speaker. The cabin has great outdoor spaces — the deck, the hot tub, around the fire pit. A portable speaker makes those evenings significantly better.
Card games or a board game. There will be at least one rainy afternoon. A good card game or board game turns it into a highlight of the trip.
Your favorite coffee and a French press or pour-over. The cabin has a coffee maker, but if you're particular about your morning coffee, bring your own beans and brewing setup. Mornings on the deck with good coffee are one of the true pleasures of a cabin stay.
Battery pack and portable charger. Cell service can be inconsistent. Keep your phone charged so maps and photos are always available when you need them.
What You Don't Need to Bring
Towels, linens, pillows, basic kitchen supplies, soap, shampoo, conditioner, and a hair dryer are all provided. We want you to pack light and arrive relaxed. The cabin handles the basics so you can focus on the good stuff.
One Final Tip
Download your maps and any playlists offline before you leave home. Spotty service is part of the charm out here — embrace the disconnect. That's kind of the whole point.
